Bullying: Montreal’s Tandem Offices are involved
The members of the Table of mandatory organizations for urban security of the City of Montreal, in response to the many discussions on bullying induced by the media over the last few weeks, would like to clarify that not all organizations are inactive in face of the reality experienced by our youth.
The table brings together 17 representatives from the Tandem offices, a member from almost every Montreal borough, who are concerned about the safety of our youth. Containment of violence and intimidation is also one of our priorities. Numerous preventive actions and interventions were conducted in primary schools from Montreal for the past several years and counting.
We invite you to look at our <<Directory of activities offered Tandem>> as part of its program <<Youth and urban security>> to see all the work that has been done and to inform citizens. We also emphasize that all is not necessarily bad in the bullying dossier. We meet many who are mobilizing youth through our activities in order to curb this scourge and other forms of violence experienced in their school, on the way home between school and home, and on the internet. Community groups, schools and concerned citizens who would like to join our programs or initiate new ones, are welcome to contact us.
To obtain more information on our mission and/or to contact the Tandem office situated in your borough, please visit our website http://preventionndg.org > Programs > Tandem CDN/NDG

What is the definition of bullying?
When someone (a bully) is in a position of power over his victim (is in a position of authority, is stronger physically, is part of a group against a single person, etc.)
The bully intends to hurt (E.g.: give me some money or I will beat you, etc.)
Bullying is repetitive (every day, every month, etc.)
Bullying is an infraction of the Criminal Code!
What does « taxage » mean?
It is an aggravated theft by using threats or intimidation.
A person demands an object/money from another person without his/her consent.
It is also an infraction of the Criminal code!
* Any person over the age of 12, may be accused of a criminal infraction, which can lead to consequences such as a criminal record.
When a youth is recognize as guilty according to the criminal code, the court will order one or many of the following restrictions:
- Abstain from contacting certain people and/or visiting certain places.
- Respect a curfew.
- Report regularly to a person designated by the court.
- Pay a fine and/or do community work.
- Be placed in a youth residence for the time determined by court.
Physical: kicking of punching, squeezing the arm, slaps in the face, etc.
Verbal: hurting someone with words, insulting, ridiculing, bringing someone down, etc.
Psychological: isolating someone from family or friends, using feelings to manipulate (you would do it if you really loved me, etc.)
Is verbal violence less cruel than physical violence? If there are no signs of physical violence, does it mean that the consequences are less severe?
Here some tips to decrease your chances of falling victim to bullying:
- Do not expose valuable objects (IPod, laptop, mobile, jewellery, etc.) in public places such as schools, street, metro, etc.
- Stay near busy areas.
- Avoid walking alone in isolated areas (parks, alleys).
If I am a victim of violence or bullying, what can I do?
